“If I cancel my hosting with GoDaddy I should still be able to access my site in WP, correct?” No.
“If I cancel my domain can I still access my site in WP?” No.
Your domain, without host, is just a sign, pointing nowhere. You can keep the domain if you keep it registered.
You might consider hosting on your own PC, to keep your site available to you. Try https://localwp.com to download the necessary software.
Thank you, Steven, for the reply.
By “WP” I do mean “WordPress”
I don’t need this site to be live for anyone else to see anymore. If I can access it for myself, if I ever want to make it public again that’s all I want to do.
I think if I give up the domain I’d probably need to pay more for it later.
Was just curious if I give up GoDaddy hosting if that means I cannot access it, as the creator of the content in my WordPress account.
Host it locally, as noted above.
If you give up the domain registration, it may not be available later.
Hello @2025cococanakis,
To clarify further, if you cancel your hosting with GoDaddy, you will not be able to access your WordPress site as it is currently set up, because the hosting is where your site’s data and files are stored. Without hosting, there’s no server to store these files, and thus, the site won’t be accessible online or through your WordPress dashboard.
If you are considering canceling your domain but want to keep the option to use the website in the future, you indeed might end up paying more to reacquire the domain if you let it lapse, especially if someone else registers it.
Since you mentioned you might want to access the site for personal use or possibly make it public again in the future, hosting it locally on your own computer would be a good solution. This way, you can access and modify your site without needing an internet server. The tool Steven suggested, LocalWP, is great for this purpose. It allows you to run WordPress from your own computer as if it were hosted online, giving you full access to develop and modify your site without any hosting fees.
Hope this helps!
Ayesha
Thank you Steven and Ayesha. I will look into https://localwp.com.
I really appreciate the time you took to help explain that. It was so ling ago when I set it up I just forgot that I must have used a host and back then it was probably WordPress.
thanks!
