Traditional Chinese Music

Hutong School is pleased to welcome the traditional Chinese music ensemble Tong Xin to come and play for us. Among the instruments played, there will be the Erhu, Pipa (a lute), Yangqin, and Dizi (a bamboo flute), etc.

Traditional Chinese music can be traced as far back as the Zhou Dynasty (1122 BC – 256 BC). But it was not until the Tang Dynasty that dancing and singing entered the mainstream, spreading from the royal court to the common people.

Traditional Chinese music can be played by a solo instrument or in groups. When played in ensemble, groups usually consist of bowed- and plucked- stringed instruments, woodwinds, and percussion.

We will have a chance to listen to the ensemble play together as well as hear each instrument solo. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to approach the artists and try out the instruments yourselves.

Time: 7:30pm, Tuesday, October 26th
